I've never heard of any of these movies!

Image of Micmacs FilmWe've all been there.  It's sweltering hot outside, and the thought of doing anything except staying inside makes you cringe.  (Or in this week's case, it's rainy or insanely humid.)  You have the brilliant idea of coming to the library to check out some movies to keep you occupied indoors, but you find that everyone else had the same idea & all that's left to check out are a bunch of movies you've never heard of or never heard anything about.  Before you curse the skies, shouting Woe Is I, let me tell you about some movies you might have missed!

Humor, the dark kind.  Two of my favorite dark humor films are of the very, very dark variety.  I kind of felt like a terrible person laughing, but Super & In Bruges are so unique & filled with complex characters that I can't not mention them.  They aren't for everyone, especially Super, but if you don't mind violence, moral gray-areas, & laughter mixed into one, you may be the target audience for these two.  In lesser degrees Kick Ass & Intolerable Cruelty share that same sense of humor that isn't your garden variety slapstick or joke-leaden script.

Foreign Films.  Wait, don't stop reading now!  I know they have sub-titles, but there are some faaaantastic ones to be had out there.  Once you watch for a few minutes, you'll be so  involved in the story, you'll forget you're reading to follow along.  You may have heard of Amelie, but have you seen Micmacs?  They share a director, & the quirk he brings to both is lovely, sweet, & fun.  (If you're not opposed to extremely strange, this same director is also the mastermind behind Delicatessen & City of Lost Children.)  For something heavier & realistic in a mind-blowing, life-changing sort of way, watch City of God.

Geeky cool.  Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, hands-down, no contest is the movie I must suggest.  The script, the comedy, the characters, the soundtrack.  The attention to detail is mesmerizing!  Don't miss it!  (If you end up digging the old-school video game feel in Scott Pilgrim, you may enjoy the book Ready Player One.)

I just searched our online catalog, & all of these movies have at least one copy available, on the shelf right now!  Get to it!
